Books For Africa believes that access to education is the great equalizer, and that providing books to African schools and community centers will allow children to be empowered by reading to achieve their full potential. BFA will partner with EDC 2013 to achieve the delivery of 22,000 reading and school books to two NGOs in the Kibera Slum of Nairobi, Kenya, who advocate for the protection and educational advancement of children in the slum.

Books For Africa’s mission is to end the book famine in Africa.  Books For Africa (BFA) collects, sorts and distributes new and gently used books throughout the African continent, putting books in the hands of children who would otherwise go without.BFA ships to African partners such as NGOs, rotary clubs, Ministries of Education and foundations, who receive 40-foot containers of 22,000 books and coordinate their distribution to schools, universities, orphanages, and libraries with which they are connected.

Books for Africa is the largest shipper of donated books to the African continent in the world, shipping 22.2 million books to 48 African countries since its founding in 1988.

Books For Africa believes that education is an essential human right, and that access to books—as a means of developing literacy skills—is an essential part of a good education.

If you would like to make a donation as a gift for another person, BFA will send a handwritten note to your honoree, informing them that you have sponsored “x” boxes of books to children in Tanzania in honor of “their birthday, wedding, Christmas, etc.” This information (honoree’s full name, address or email, amount of donation, and occasion for the donation) can be emailed to rachel@booksforafrica.org upon making the donation.
